The short answer: is a protein bar healthy?

It depends entirely on what's inside. A great many commercial protein bars are, at their core, ordinary confectionery bars with a scoop of whey powder added for good measure. They contain anywhere from 200 to 300 kcal, plenty of sugar or sugar alcohols, and barely any fibre. A well-formulated protein bar, with at least 15g of protein and under 8g of sugar, is a genuinely useful and practical snack.

The 5 things to check on the label

Below are the five criteria that let you tell a good bar from a poor one in under 60 seconds. All you need is the nutrition label.

  1. Protein: at least 12g, ideally 15 to 20g

    A bar containing less than 12g of protein barely earns the name "protein bar". For satiety and muscle maintenance, look for at least 15g per portion. The British Dietetic Association suggests 20 to 40g of protein per meal occasion as a guideline for adults working on muscle maintenance. A bar with 15g of protein counts as a solid contribution, particularly when combined with another protein source elsewhere in your day.

  2. Sugar: under 8g, and mind the source

    A label can claim "low sugar" while the sweetener used is glycerol or a blend of maltitol and sorbitol. These don't technically count as sugar, yet they still contribute calories and can cause digestive discomfort in larger amounts. Look for bars with under 8g of genuine sugars per portion, without misleading substitutes as the main sweetener.

  3. Fibre: at least 4g per portion

    Fibre slows the absorption of sugars and extends that feeling of fullness. Most people already fall short on fibre. Look for a bar with 4g or more of fibre, which makes a meaningful contribution to your daily target.

  4. Protein-to-calorie ratio: above 0.08

    Divide the grams of protein by the number of kilocalories. A bar with 20g protein and 200 kcal scores 0.10, which is good. A bar with 10g protein and 250 kcal scores 0.04, which is essentially a snack wearing a label. This ratio gives you the protein density of the product in a single figure.

  5. First three ingredients: protein source first, fat source second

    Ingredients are listed by weight. If the first three ingredients are "glucose syrup, palm fat, chocolate" and protein doesn't appear until position six, the bar is primarily a confectionery product. What you want to see is a protein source (whey, casein, soy protein, pea protein) in first position, followed by a fibre source or a healthy fat.

One thing stands out: the cheapest options consistently score worst on sugar and fibre. Price is no guarantee of quality, but products under €1.75 apiece contain an average of over 11g of sugar per portion.

Marketing tricks to watch for

The food industry has a handful of well-worn tactics for making bars appear healthier than they actually are. Here are the most common ones.

  • "10g protein per portion": sounds like a decent contribution, but if the bar contains 250 kcal and the protein-to-calorie ratio is 0.04, you're mainly getting calories. A handful of nuts gives you comparable protein with more nutritional value.
  • "Low sugar": in the EU, this label can be used if the product contains less than 5g of sugar per 100g. Sugar alcohols such as maltitol aren't counted towards that figure, yet they still supply around 2.4 kcal per gram and, at doses above 20g a day, can cause noticeable digestive upset.
  • "Natural ingredients" or "clean label": these aren't regulated terms. They say nothing about nutritional value, sugar content or protein quality. A bar can be marketed as "natural" and still contain 18g of sugar per portion.
  • Oversized portions: some bars are labelled per 45g serving but physically weigh 60 to 70g. You end up eating more than the stated portion, and therefore more calories, sugar and sugar alcohols than the label implies.

When a protein bar is genuinely a healthy choice

A protein bar is a tool. That tool works well in the following situations.

  • Replacing an unhealthy snack: if you'd normally reach for a biscuit, a chocolate bar or a bag of crisps between meals, a well-formulated protein bar is a straightforward upgrade. You get more protein, fewer fast-releasing sugars, and a longer-lasting feeling of fullness.
  • Post-workout, within 3 hours of your next meal: after training, your body needs amino acids for muscle recovery. If your next proper meal is more than 90 minutes away, a bar with 15 to 20g of protein bridges the gap well. This lines up with findings on post-exercise protein synthesis described in, among others, the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2017).
  • Travelling or on the move: situations without a fridge or kitchen to hand. A bar fits in a pocket and doesn't spoil. That makes it practical and realistic, without needing to stand in for a full meal.

When a protein bar isn't a healthy choice

There are situations where a protein bar does more harm than good.

  • As extra calories on top of an already complete diet: if you're already getting enough calories and protein, a bar simply adds 175 to 280 kcal on top. That works against you if weight loss is the goal.
  • Three or more a day, every day: even good bars contain processed ingredients, sweeteners and bound fats. A pattern of three bars a day as meal replacements isn't a healthy eating pattern, and it's not a strategy supported by the Schijf van Vijf, the Dutch national food guide.
  • In place of real, varied meals: bars lack the micronutrients, antioxidants and complexity of whole foods. They're meant as a supplement, not a foundation.

Sugar alcohols: the hidden problem

Many bars use sugar alcohols as sweeteners to keep the sugar figure on the label low. The most common are maltitol, xylitol and sorbitol. They have a lower glycaemic index than ordinary sugar, but they're not without downsides.

Sugar alcohols are only partially absorbed in the small intestine. What's left over ferments in the large intestine. At amounts above 20 to 25g a day, this leads many people to experience bloating, wind and diarrhoea. Maltitol comes off worst here: it also has a relatively high glycaemic index of 52, meaning it still has a noticeable effect on blood sugar.

On the label, you'll spot them by names ending in "-ol": maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol, lactitol. Erythritol is the exception, as it's almost fully absorbed and generally doesn't cause digestive issues at normal doses.

If you're sensitive to high-FODMAP foods, choose bars without sugar alcohols, or ones sweetened with erythritol alone.

Plant-based protein bars: are they better?

Not by definition. Plant-based bars avoid animal-derived ingredients, but that says nothing about their sugar or fibre content. There are plant-based bars with 14g of sugar per portion and others with just 5g. The origin of the protein is a separate question entirely.

The real difference lies in protein quality. Animal-derived protein sources such as whey and casein have a DIAAS score (Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score) above 1.0, meaning they contain all the essential amino acids in the right proportions. Pea protein and rice protein score lower individually, but combining the two brings you considerably closer to the amino acid completeness of animal protein. Soy protein isolate also performs relatively well on amino acid profile.

Advantages of plant-based bars include no lactose, a lower environmental footprint, and often a higher fibre content. The downside is that you need to see two combined sources on the label more often to match the same protein quality.
