What Are High-Quality Proteins, and Why Does It Matter?

Short answer

Packaging often tells you how many grams of protein a product contains. But the quality of those proteins varies enormously.

Wat is de hoogwaardige eiwitten en waarom matter het?

High-quality proteins: it's about more than just the grams

Packaging usually tells you how many grams of protein a product contains, but the quality of that protein can vary enormously.

What is biological value?

Biological value (BV) measures how efficiently your body can put dietary protein to use for muscle building and recovery. The higher the BV, the more of that protein actually reaches your muscles.

Sources with a high BV

  • Milk protein concentrate (BV roughly 90 to 100)
  • Whey protein (BV roughly 100)
  • Egg (BV 100, often used as the reference point)
  • Casein (BV roughly 80)

Sources with a lower BV

  • Plant-based proteins such as soya, pea or rice (BV 70 to 80)
  • Bread and grains (BV 50 to 60)

What does this mean for your diet?

On a high-protein diet aimed at weight loss, you want to prioritise protein sources with a high BV. In practice, that means 15g of high-quality protein from milk protein does more for your satiety and muscle retention than 15g of protein from bread.

Most Bioteïne products are based on milk protein concentrate, one of the most efficient protein sources you can eat.
