The protein diet: the complete guide in 4 stages
The protein diet guides you through four consecutive phases towards lasting weight loss. You temporarily follow a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, so that you burn fat whilst maintaining muscle mass. Below, you can read exactly how it works, who it’s suitable for and how to maintain your results, straight from the founders of the phase system.
The protein diet is a high-protein eating plan that guides you through four consecutive phases towards lasting weight loss. You temporarily eat extra protein and few carbohydrates. This causes your body to switch to burning fat, whilst you maintain your muscle mass and feel less hungry. In this guide, you’ll find out exactly how it works, who it’s suitable for, what to eat in each phase and how to maintain your results.
This guide has been written by the Bioteïne team. We are the founders of the original phase system and have been helping people with it for over twenty years. During that time, we’ve helped more than 30,000 people get started. Below, we share exactly what works, honestly and without empty promises.
What is the protein diet?
The protein diet, also known as the high-protein diet, is a weight-loss method centred on protein. Instead of focusing primarily on calories, you consciously eat a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet for a few weeks. Protein keeps you feeling full for longer than carbohydrates, protects your muscles whilst you’re losing weight, and requires your body to expend a relatively large amount of energy to digest. The result: you lose fat mass, not muscle mass, and you feel less hungry.
The difference compared to a standard low-calorie diet lies in its structure. The protein diet consists of four phases that gradually ease from strict to normal. You start strongly, gradually reintroduce a normal diet, and end up with a lifestyle you can maintain for the rest of your life. It is precisely this structured approach that delivers lasting results and helps prevent the yo-yo effect.
How does the protein diet work?
The protein diet is based on three principles that reinforce one another:
- Satiety. Protein keeps you feeling full for longer than bread, pasta or sugar. As a result, you naturally eat less, without feeling constantly hungry.
- Fat burning. By severely restricting carbohydrates, your sugar stores are depleted and your body switches to burning fat for fuel. This is called ketosis.
- Muscle preservation. By consuming enough protein, your body breaks down less muscle tissue. You lose fat whilst retaining your muscles, which helps maintain your metabolism.
In the first phase, you’ll eat an average of four to six protein-rich portions a day, supplemented with vegetables. A portion could be, for example, a shake, an omelette, a soup or a protein-based pancake. This ensures you get plenty of protein and few calories, whilst still enjoying a varied and satisfying diet.
The 4-phase system
At the heart of the protein diet is the phase system. Four phases take you step by step from a powerful start to a lasting lifestyle. Each phase has its own goal.
Phase 1: the power start
This is the strictest and most effective phase. You eat a diet consisting entirely of protein and very few carbohydrates, supplemented with unlimited amounts of high-fibre vegetables. Your body enters ketosis and starts burning fat. In this phase, you achieve the bulk of your results – often around sixty per cent of your target. Phase 1 usually lasts one to two weeks. If you have a major goal, you can continue for longer in consultation with your coach.
Phase 2: the combination phase
You gradually replace some of the protein products with one healthy, normal meal per day. You continue to lose weight, but at a more moderate pace. Here, you learn to combine protein-rich products with regular food, an important step towards lasting results. Phase 2 accounts for around a quarter of your target.
Phase 3: the transition phase
Now you’ll gradually reintroduce normal food. Step by step, you’ll add healthy carbohydrates, such as wholemeal products and fruit, whilst phasing out the protein products. The aim of this phase is to allow your body to get used to eating normally without putting on weight straight away. This is the phase that many crash diets skip, and it’s precisely why people end up putting the weight back on.
Phase 4: the lifestyle phase
The final phase is no longer a diet, but a way of life. You’ll eat a normal, varied diet again, whilst continuing to ensure you get enough protein and don’t consume too much sugar. A protein-rich snack or a shake will help you stay on track. This is the phase that helps you maintain your results in the long term.
Who is the protein diet suitable for?
The protein diet is suitable for healthy adults who want to lose weight in a targeted way and who appreciate structure and clarity. It’s a good fit if you:
- want to lose a few kilos or a significant amount of weight and want a clear plan to do so;
- have little time to cook and appreciate ready-made, quick meals;
- struggle with hunger or cravings on standard diets;
- really want to maintain your weight after losing it, rather than putting it back on.
The protein diet is not intended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people with certain medical conditions such as kidney problems, type 1 diabetes, gout or an eating disorder. Are you unsure whether it’s suitable for your situation, or are you taking any medication? If so, please consult your GP or dietitian first. Safety always comes first.
What can you achieve?
How much weight you lose depends on your starting weight, your goal and how strictly you follow the plan. We don’t make wild promises, but in practice we see that many people get off to a flying start in phase 1 and then continue at a healthy, more gradual pace towards their target weight. More important than speed is maintaining the results, and the whole system is built around that.
Realistically, this means: a good, visible start in the first few weeks, followed by gradual weight loss, and then stabilising your new weight in Phases 3 and 4. No yo-yo effect, but a weight loss trajectory you can sustain.
An example of a day in phase 1
This is what a day in the power-start phase might look like. Nice and varied, even though it sounds strict:
| Time | What you eat |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Protein-rich porridge or a shake of your choice |
| Snack | A protein bar or a handful of nuts |
| Lunch | Protein-rich soup with unlimited vegetables |
| Snack | A protein pudding or yoghurt |
| Dinner | High-protein omelette or pancake with vegetables, or a ready-made meal |
| Throughout the day | Plenty of water, tea and coffee without sugar |
So you eat four to six times a day. The regularity and the protein keep you feeling full and maintain a steady energy level.
What can and can’t you eat?
In phase 1, it’s all about protein and vegetables, and you’ll be cutting out sugar and fast-acting carbohydrates. Here’s a handy overview:
| Yes | Not allowed (in phase 1) |
|---|---|
| Protein-rich foods (shakes, bars, soups, pudding, omelettes, pancakes) | Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes |
| Fibre-rich vegetables (cucumber, lettuce, courgette, broccoli, spinach) | Sugar, sweets, biscuits, fizzy drinks |
| Lean meat, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy (more in later phases) | Plenty of fruit and fruit juices (due to the sugar content) |
| Water, tea, coffee, herbal teas | Alcohol |
From phase 2 onwards, healthy, normal meals are introduced. From phase 3 onwards, wholemeal carbohydrates and fruit are allowed again. In this way, your menu becomes more varied with each phase.
The role of the foods
The protein products make the protein diet easy to stick to. Instead of having to work everything out yourself, you simply grab a shake, soup, bar or meal that has exactly the right balance of protein and carbohydrates. This saves time, prevents mistakes and keeps things varied, as monotony is the main reason people give up.
Our products have been developed in collaboration with dietitians and comply with European nutritional standards. We use stevia as a sweetener instead of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose, so you know exactly what you’re consuming. For each phase, you can choose exactly the products that suit your current stage in the programme.
Tips for sticking with it
- Plan your day. Prepare your portions in advance so you don’t face any surprises.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Two litres of water a day helps curb hunger and supports your body during phase 1.
- Vary your meals. Make the most of the full range, from savoury soups to sweet puddings, so you don’t get bored.
- Celebrate small successes. It’s not just the scales that matter – increased energy and clothes that fit better count too.
- Don’t skip phase 3. The transition back to a normal diet is what helps you maintain your results.
Is the protein diet safe?
For healthy adults, a period of high-protein eating is perfectly manageable. It’s important not to stick to phase 1 – the strictest phase – indefinitely, but to use it as a powerful one- to two-week kick-start. After that, you’ll gradually expand your diet as you progress through the phases. Drink plenty of fluids, make sure you eat enough vegetables and listen to your body.
Do you have a medical condition, are you pregnant or breastfeeding, or are you taking any medication? If so, consult your GP or dietitian before you start. The protein diet is a tool, not a substitute for medical advice.

Veelgestelde vragen
